Fashion sales at John Lewis rose 4% for the week to July 11, bucking the overall trend at the department store chain.
Total sales at John Lewis were down 1.6% to £54.3m over the period. John Lewis said that the performance was one of the best weeks of the year so far, with Friday and Saturday proving to be the strongest days as the weather became more changeable.
Fashion was the best performing division, especially kidswear.
John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said: “Areas of kidswear were in high demand with girlswear finding particular favour with our customers and nursery too. Our menswear offer appears to be bucking a rather gloomy trend across the sector as a whole with branded ranges moving well and a speedy transition into new season product complementing the reduced price bargains which remain.”
Sales at John Lewis Direct, which includes its online operation, were up 18.2%.
The Cambridge and Peter Jones in London’s Sloane Square were the best performing branches, with increases of 3.3% and 1.6% respectively.
