John Lewis notched up its best weekly sales performance so far this year, with only a marginal fall in sales of 0.4% to £46.8 million for the week to May 9.
The retailer’s fashion category was a standout performer where sales were up 1.1% for the period.
Over the week, sales at seven stores out of the 27-strong portfolio were up on last year, despite tough comparisons due to warm weather this time last year.
John Lewis merchandise director Jill Little said: “Our sales comparisons for May and June are softer than we have been used to, so as we look to the next few weeks it should be with a sense of optimism and opportunity. We have every chance to start pulling back some of the existing sales deficit if we continue to inspire our customers and capitalise on the improving trend we delivered last week.”
