John Lewis mid week sales rise 4.3%

John Lewis said sales rose 4.3% from Sunday to Wednesday this week despite continuing challenges from the weather in some areas.

John Lewis singled out lingerie as very popular with male customers for last minute purchases. The best selling lingerie brands were Mimi Holliday, Stella McCartney and Elle Macpherson selling 25%, 23% and 15% more than last year respectively.

Retail director Andrew Murphy said: “As expected, some trade has migrated from our online channel to our shops, following the cut off for pre-Christmas deliveries, making for a fantastic atmosphere in our branches across the UK.”

Murphy said John Lewis would hold its “biggest ever” clearance Sale with online Sales beginning at 5pm on Christmas Eve and stores following suit on December 27.

Last week the department store group saw sales reach £120.3m for the week to December 18, up 7% year on year. Despite taking a sales hit of almost £5m on Saturday, it managed to achieve turnover of more than £120m for the second week running and for only the second time in its history.
