John Lewis sales continue to rise despite quieter week

John Lewis had a slightly quieter week last week as the back to school season slowed however fashion sales still reported a slight rise.

For the week to September 17 sales at the department store chain were up 2.9% to £58.09m.

Fashion sales grew by 3% fuelled by the end of the back to school season with the new John Lewis & Co menswear range gathering pace with a multi-channel launch campaign.

Seven stores saw sales growth for the week. Edinburgh saw a rise of 5.7%, Knight and Lee 4.5%, Leicester 3% and Milton Keynes a rise of 2.3%. However Croydon, Reading, Norwich, Welwyn and Bluewater all registered double-digit sales declines.

Online sales continued to climb with a jump of 23.3%.

John Lewis opened a store in Westfield’s new shopping centre in Stratford last week. Director for selling operations Nat Wakely said: “Sales have started very well, hitting a top-10 ranking for the first five days of trading. Menswear with its new concept had a particularly brisk start, as did consumer electronics and beauty.”
