John Lewis sales fall

Sales at John Lewis fell by 3.2% to £44 million for the week ended February 14, but fashion sales were in positive territory.

Fashion sales rose 0.4% at John Lewis with both womenswear and kidswear performing particularly well.

The 3.2% decline was much softer than the previous week when sales fell by 17% because of the snow and bad weather.

Dan Knowles John Lewis director of selling operations region B said: “The weather still affected trade in week two of this year, although by no means to the extent it did last week.”

“We performed relatively well, with sales of -3.2% a much more pleasing result than in week one, and with all indications this was better than the market as a whole.”

Knowles added: “New stock ranges in both Home and Fashions are coming into our stores thick and fast, and the weather is set to return to a more normal pattern. We are well into our stride in the new financial year.”

Sales at were up 15% on the week.
