John Lewis sales hit by Wimbledon

John Lewis saw sales fall 2.3% to £60.13 million for the week ended July 4 but fashion sales rose 0.5%.

John Lewis said that the continuing sunny weather and Andy Murray’s progress at Wimbledon last week had impacted sales.

Kidswear was the star-performer within the fashion category. John Lewis said there were also some outstanding performances within some of its key womenswear brands, including a record for at least one of its major brands, though it did not disclose which one.

John Lewis Direct and the department stores’ Peter Jones branch in London and its store in Cambridge were the only ones to show positive increases over the week.

The worst performing branches were Watford, which was down 17.6% and Bluewater in Kent, which was down 16.2%.
