John Lewis scored its best results of the year so far, with sales up 2% to £43 million over the week to May 23.
John Lewis said the comparative 2008 figure for the corresponding week was soft but added that the performance was a satisfying one, in spite of the warm weather which swept much of the country.
Fashion sales were up 5.4% with seven shops posting weekly gains. John Lewis in Manchester’s Trafford Centre led the way, followed by Cambridge and Sheffield. Stores in Southampton, Norwich, Cribbs Causeway in Bristol and Solihull completed the leading group.
John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said: “Last week’s results suggest that Partners are successfully managing the many changes being enacted across the business while retaining the proper focus on our customers and their needs.”
