John Lewis has seen a second record week of sales, smashing the previous week’s record by more than £5m.
The department store took £147.8m in the week to December 15, up from £142m last week - the highest weekly figure John Lewis had ever recorded.
Sales were up 11.1% on the same week last year.
Gift buying for women resulted in strong sales of handbags, jewellery, lingerie and beauty products.
Lace dresses for women and three-piece suits for men also proved popular, while sales of Christmas jumpers and cardigans doubled.
Maggie Porteous, head of selling operations for John Lewis, said:“With a further nine shopping days before the big event, it is excellent news to have already had two record weeks, both over £140m for the first time.
“While some of our customers will have finished their gift buying, have their homes decorated and be prepared for guests, many are still set to shop during the final week and weekend, with a number leaving it right up until the last minute on 24 December.”
Porteous added that the department store was alreayd preparing for its clearance sale, which will start online at 5pm on Christmas Eve, and in store on December 27.
