John Lewis sees strong start to second half

Fashion sales enjoyed a gold medal performance last week at John Lewis, up 25.5% signalling a strong start for the retailer in the second half of its financial year.

The department store retailer said that the increase in fashion sales was across all departments in the week to August 4 with menswear and sportswear leading the charge.

Overall sales at John Lewis were up 22.4% on last year as the better weather, new ranges and sporting activity, as a result of the Olympics, all helped to drive sales.

The retailer’s online performance via johnlewis.com was up 44.3% compared to the previous year as new season ranges also sold well online.

Reading and Swindon were the top performing stores, with Reading’s recent refurbishment ensuring the store put in growth across all areas.

“It is a great way to start the second half and gives us real confidence that we are well positioned for the rest of the year,” said Tim Harrison John Lewis head of commercial format and implementation.

“As with gold medals, we only see the results and not all of the hard work that goes into them. Here, we have done a great job to position ourselves for success.”
