John Lewis womenswear drives 11.3% sales uplift

Fashion sales at department store retailer John Lewis climbed 11.3% over the week to September 26 with womenswear putting in a particularly strong performance.

Total sales at the 28-store retailer rose 4.7% to £51m as John Lewis exceeded budgetary targets and fashion sales at website johnlewis.com continued to “delight” the retailer.

John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said the John Lewis store in Cardiff, which opened last week, notched up an impressive contribution to the total weekly sales figure.

He added : “Fashion assortments stole the show last week with four of the five merchandise groups seeing double digit growth. The momentum being established in womenswear and beauty in particular bodes very well for the run up to Christmas when the hard work done throughout the year to create a compelling offer and retain our high service levels should pay off handsomely.”

The retailer said that John Lewis stores in Trafford, Sheffield. Southampton, Bluewater and Cheadle posted weekly results ahead of the average.

Murphy added: “While the division’s two-year comparison reminds us that most of our current gain is really ground recaptured from last Autumn’s sharp decline, we mustn’t lose sight of the hard work and skill which goes into teasing out each sale in every shop.”
