Mark Fenwick, Group chairman, Fenwick

When department store group Fenwick snapped up Colchester store Williams & Griffin there was a rosy halo surrounding the deal.

That glow manifested itself last month when the chain, led by group chairman Mark Fenwick, announced a pre-tax profit rise of 16% to £41.7 million for the year ended January 25.

Fenwick said net sales rose 2.7% to £350.3m over the period and its turnover, excluding concessions, rose 1% to £283.2m for the year.
In accounts filed at Companies House recently, Fenwick said that it remained confident it could maintain the current performance in spite of the competitive market.
