Mary Portas launches retail workshops

Independent retailers will be able to apply for grants to attend workshops run by fashion business guru Mary Portas, under a scheme being developed by training body Skillsmart Retail.

Mary Portas, star of the BBC 2 makeover television series Mary Queen of Shops, will create courses which will cover fundamental business practices of running a retail business, including training in buying and merchandising and marketing.

The courses are aimed mostly at small businesses, and retailers will be able to apply for funding to attend the courses under the government’s Train2Gain Leadership and Management scheme.

The courses are being created by Mary Portas in conjunction with Skillsmart Retail, the sector skills council which promotes training opportunities in the retail sector, and will be piloted at selected locations around the country over the next few weeks.

The courses are expected to be fully up and running by the end of the year and will be operated via the National Skills Academy for Retail’s new network of training centres, called Skills Shops, which was launched last week.
