Menswear was the star performer in the week to May 12 at John Lewis, driving fashion sales up 6.9%.
The department store retailer said that during the week, which included the May bank holiday, menswear achieved 13.4% growth compared to last year, with branded menswear particularly strong, up 18%.
Wet weather and the retailer having to compete with competitor’s promotional activity meant that linens, sandals and sunglasses performed below last year, while sales of umbrellas were more than 200% up.
Overall sales at the retailer were up 16.6% compared to last year influenced by the varying national weather with poor weather in the north driving footfall.
Online sales also performed well for the retailer, up 50% with click-and-collect seeing strong growth.
