Modiste show raises £1k for charity

Stockport womenswear retailer Modiste has celebrated its first birthday with a fashion show for customers which raised more than £1,000 for local cancer and children’s charities.

The fashion show featured friends and family of the store owners modelling 80 outfits.

Co-owner Elaine Nadin said customer events to help drive sales had become a regular feature since the business launched in March last year. Nadin said that because the store was relatively new it was difficult to know if the shop had been affected by the recession, but she had noticed that shoppers were not buying as many items.

She said: “We’ve found that they [the shows] really work and we need them now to keep people interested and show them what we have that is new and fresh.”

The store, on Lower Hillgate, sells brands including Soaked in Luxury, Sugarhill Boutique, Almost Famous, Darling, Boutique and Obi, as well as its own occasionwear label Modiste, designed by co-owner Sue Day.

The 1,000sq ft shop also has a 1,000sq ft design studio in the basement, which offers a bespoke service for the Modiste label.
