Mohamed Al Fayed, Owner, Harrods

Mohamed Al Fayed is one of fashion’s characters whose profile stretches into the celebrity arena.

While the Harrods owner is rarely out of the tabloids, financial performance is one area in which his tactics are beyond debate.

The luxury department store posted record group sales of £688.3 million, this year and pre-tax profits soared 38% to £58.9m for the year to February 2.

Under Al Fayed’s guidance, the world-famous store has underlined its aspirational credentials and the appointment of James McArthur from Gucci Group as chief executive has helped to strengthen that image.

It was further reinforced when Harrods refurbished a number of departments and piggybacked the Heathrow Terminal 5 opening with a store that proved Harrods can operate outside of Knightsbridge.
