Airport retailing in line for boost

Retail sales at airports will grow by 11% in 2008 to $30 billion (£16bn) - defying the general economic slump.

Verdict Research said that its latest report into airport retailing showed it was the fastest growth channel for retail after the internet.

Verdict Research said that although retail sales at airports in developed markets would remain resilient, the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and the Middle East presented the greatest opportunities for retailers.

Increasing passenger numbers is also a key driver for growth according to Verdict Research. Nick Gladding, lead analyst and author of the report said: "The key factors stimulating this growth are the increased affluence, growing tourism, rapidly expanding airline networks and new routes (especially those of low cost carriers). The increase in business travel as a result of globalisation is providing a further boost to airport retailers."
