Alibaba’s sales during Singles' Day exceed predictions at £4.9bn

Chinese etailer Alibaba racked up record sales of £4.9bn (47.3 billion yuan) during this year’s Singles Day sales event, surpassing all predictions.

The company said at 8pm Beijing time today (November 11) that it had shipped 224 million orders, beating last year’s 150 million packages.

China’s Singles’ Day is considered the world’s biggest online shopping event. Last year the day smashed online sales records, taking $5.8bn (£3.6bn) in 24 hours.
