Amazon’s third annual Prime Day sales event grew by more than 60% globally compared with last year, the ecommerce giant has reported.
Amazon claimed it resulted in the largest single day of sales to date, surpassing Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It did not disclose specific figures.
The online sale ran for a 30-hour period, starting at 6pm on Tuesday 11 July.
The number of Prime subscribers making a purchase jumped by more than 50%, while customer orders made on Amazon’s app more than doubled.
Amazon said its merchants – comprising small businesses and entrepreneurs – enjoyed sales growth of more than 60%.
Orders in the UK included more than 13,000 sports shoes, along with 31,000 exercise and fitness products.
The top-selling item in the UK was interactive speaker Amazon Echo.
Amazon UK country manager Doug Gurr said: “Prime members in the UK have loved Prime Day – in fact the day was our biggest day of the year so far, and by 9pm customers had already ordered more items than Prime Day last year.”
Merchants expecting to see a sales boost from Prime Day included accessories seller Lifestyle Hunter.
Founder Gayle Hunter said she expected sales to outperform levels seen in the previous year, when it saw a “250% increase”.
