Amazon scraps New York HQ plan

Amazon has cancelled plans to build a new €2.5bn (£1.9bn) headquarters in New York.

The office in Long Island City would have created 2,500 jobs and received almost $3bn (£2.3bn) in subsidies and tax breaks from the state and city, according to Reuters.

However, the company faced local opposition over the tax incentives from some politicians.

Amazon said: “While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”
