The 1m sq ft site will create 500 permanent jobs in the next three years, as part of Amazon’s plans to employ a further people in the UK this year. The company will have a UK workforce of 14,500 by the end of 2016, it said.

Amazon currently has 10 fulfilment centres in the UK: two in Doncaster and one each in Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.

It comes as the etailer looks set to expand its fashion business with the hire of former Marks & Spencer womenswear director Frances Russell and the development of private label brands.
