Amazon US moots launch of own-label fashion brands

Amazon may launch its own fashion labels to complement its branded offer, one of its US executives said yesterday.

“For Amazon, we know our customers love brands…and that’s where the lion’s share of our business comes from,” said Jeff Yurcisin, vice president of clothing at Amazon Fashion and chief executive of Amazon’s Shopbop unit, at the WWD Apparel and Retail CEO Summit yesterday, according to BuzzFeed News.

“When we see gaps, when certain brands have actually decided for their own reasons not to sell with us, our customer still wants a product like that.” Amazon may get into private-label for those kinds of goods, he added.

Amazon US has not yet responded to Drapers’ request for comment, but a UK spokeswoman said there were currently no plans for Amazon own-label brands in Europe. 

Amazon first entered the fashion industry in 2007 with a shoe store, jewellery store and watch store, before launching its clothing store a year later.

The etailer broke its own records in December 2014, selling more than 1 million items of clothing and footwear in a single week. It introduced a dedicated dress store in May.

Amazon has introduced more than 100 new fashion brands such as Hugo Boss since the start of year, joining a selection that includes Emporio Armani, Ted Baker, French Connection and Vivienne Westwood.

Most recently, it opened a 46,000 sq ft photography studio in Shoreditch, east London, this summer to support its growing European fashion business.

Sergio Bucher, vice-president of Amazon Fashion EU, said: “Fashion is one of the fastest-growing businesses for Amazon across Europe and the creation of this new studio illustrates both our ambitions in this area and our dedication to providing a first-class customer experience.

“Our new studio will enable us to produce high volumes of top-class photography by employing great talent in one of the leading fashion capitals of the world.”

In 2013, Amazon opened a 40,000 sq ft imaging studio in Williamsburg, New York, to support its US fashion business.
