American Apparel could dispose of five UK stores

American Apparel is considering closing nearly a third of its UK stores, including its flagship on Neal Street in London’s Covent Garden.

It is understood the leases of stores in Bristol (Cabot Circus), Leeds (Briggate), Liverpool One and Nottingham (Bridlesmith Gate) are also being marketed for sale by Kitchen La Frenais Morgan. They range from 2,500 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft in size.

The disposals would leave American Apparel with four stores in Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow. It would also retain a network of nine stores in London, plus a concession in department store Selfridges.

American Apparel’s European marketing manager Christophe Chobeaux said there were “no plans for any significant store closings in the UK”. He added: “We’re always exploring our real estate and lease options in order to provide the best stores and locations to our customers.”

Kitchen La Frenais Morgan declined to comment.
