Anya Hindmarch named businesswoman of the year

Handbag designer Anya Hindmarch has been named the Veuve Clicquot businesswoman of the year.

The designer fought off competition from founder of the River Café Ruth Rogers and Helena Morrissey, chief executive of Newton Investment Management, to be awarded the prize at a ceremony at Claridges in London last night.

The designer’s cotton shopping bag bearing the slogan ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ was praised by the judging panel for “her ability to inspire change by making it fashionable”. The bags, which were launched in 2007, aimed at encouraging shoppers to use less plastic bags.

Hindmarch said hoped her achievements would inspire others. She added: “Hopefully, women will sit up and realise it’s really exciting starting a business.”

Hindmarch founded her business aged 19 and now has 57 shops worldwide.
