As companies expand into new territories, the right team has never been so crucial

There is no doubt about it - with the green shoots of economic recovery still at a nascent stage in the UK, international expansion is the order of the day as retailers look to boost their bank balances.

However, behind any great business is an exceptional team, whether that be serving the domestic or foreign market.

Certain retailers, such as Mothercare, Debenhams or Arcadia, are quite far down the road when it comes to trading internationally, and have the structures in place to make their global aspirations happen.

But for the UK’s high street at large, most businesses are at the beginning of that journey, and are now entering the difficult stage of working out how best to manage this process.

With this in mind we welcome you to our second Global Careers Special, following on from our first outing in 2012, which seeks to answer some of the questions both employers and candidates might have.

First, we provide a summary of where the UK’s fashion retailers are with creating their global teams, highlighting best practice for employers and the wealth of opportunities for candidates.

Then, we tell both the employer and candidate what to expect when it comes to the often confusing world of contract law in foreign markets, and what you should expect in regards to career progression, remuneration and benefits. Finally, we shift our focus onto the candidate and take a look at the non-UK opportunities for British fashion professionals at the most inspiring head offices overseas, as well as the types of roles you can expect.

For retailers and candidates alike the opportunities are immense, but like any structural change or career step, it pays to make an informed decision.

We hope you enjoy this careers special, and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to tell us your thoughts.
