Asda plans Christmas TV invasion

Asda debuts its Christmas TV advert this evening, ahead of the launch of its festive marketing campaign.

The advert, which is to be broadcast for the first time on TV tonight (2 November), depicts an army of Christmas joviality heading towards a girl’s home in the run-up to the big day.

Set to Darlene Love’s Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), the minute-long ad aims to “capture the spirit and excitement that is bringing Christmas home”.

The advert sets the scene with Father Christmas lighting the fuse on a cannon and a flaming Christmas pudding being launched into the air.

The scene then opens out to include people sporting Asda’s George range of clothing and making their way towards a family home.

Along the way viewers are greeted by people riding alpine trees like bucking broncos, a troupe of Santas driving motorbikes down a hillside in a James Bond-esque chase, waitresses on skis serving hors d’oeuvres, stunt-driving abominable snowmen and a giant bouncing snowman bobbing its way to the finale outside the girl’s house.

Asda’s chief customer officer Andy Murray said the inspiration for the ad was that sense of Christmas being a time when people focus a huge amount of energy and effort on bringing people together and “coming home”: “We really wanted to hone in on a universal feeling about Christmas that people could relate to.

”The one thing we all kept coming back to was the sense of excitement that comes from preparing to bring your nearest and dearest together, how crazy and chaotic it can feel, but ultimately how all the effort results in something wonderful when you bring Christmas home.”
