Asos launches ‘try before you buy’ service

Asos has launched a “try before you buy” service that allows customers to have products delivered before they pay for them.

Powered by Klarna Pay Later, the tool allows Asos app users in the UK to try out items before paying for what they keep within 30 days of the order being dispatched. Customers must also return unwanted items within the same 30-day window.

To use the service, customers must be over 18 years of age and have a mobile phone number, email address and a UK residential address.

The service has already successfully been implemented in Germany, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

Nicola Thompson, global trading director at Asos, said: “We are constantly looking for new ways to improve the Asos experience for our 15.4 million customers around the world. We know people love the option of paying later only for the things they keep.” 

In October Asos launched its first same-day delivery option for shoppers in London. Asos previously offered next-day delivery, click-and-collect, one-hour delivery slots and free returns.

  • Germany for example has a huge rate of returns by using this method and is open to wide-scale abuse AKA 'Wear before you don't buy'.

    All ASOS will be doing by introducing this is to nibble away at their margins for something they don't need to do.

    If you want to try something on before buying, how about going into a shop? Now there's an idea.

  • There are ways to discourage "wear and return" in any channel, e.g. large, obvious and ugly break off security tags through the garment: Tag absent on return = no refund.

    If the customer wears the garment with tag attached they will be advertising themselves as a cheapskate.

    (Yes, some customers will damage the item and attempt a return using Sale of goods act "fit for purpose" reasons, so it's not a perfect solution)
