Debenhams has experienced an early pick up on sales of thermal underwear and winter woollies because of the bad weather.
Debenhams said that sales of winter coats were up 76% on last year and that sales of warm knitwear are also 53% ahead. Thermal underwear sales are up 54%. The department store said that the increases were in line with those normally experienced in October rather than August.
Debenhams said that although he had forecast for a slight uplift in sales because of the bad weather, the sales boost had been fuelled by a new “hibernation hysteria”.
A spokesman for Debenhams said: “The awful weather clearly has something to do with this ‘hibernation hysteria’. However with gas and electric companies turning up the heat it looks like many people will be turning to their wardrobe rather than the central heating thermostat this winter to keep warm.”
