Back to School boosts sales at John Lewis

John Lewis reported a 16.2% increase in sales to £84.62m for the week to August 30 as Back to School shoppers boosted footfall at branches across the UK.

Kidswear was up 20.3% for the week while total fashion sales were up 17.8%. Accessories including gloves and scarves were up 25.7% as customers began to invest for the season ahead.

Womenswear also had a strong week up 23.2%, with John Lewis’ own brands JL & Weekend leading the way up 44.7%.

Online sales increased by 27.7% for the year, with online fashion sales up 40% for the week driven by the launch of new season products and customers moving towards cooler weather categories including knitwear and outerwear.

Operations director at John Lewis Dino Rocos said: “Back to School had its peak week online with good sales across clothing and shoes. As summer begins to fade, our focus turns towards warmer products and Christmas moves one step closer.”
