Bad weather blamed for drop in footfall last week

Wind and rain kept shoppers away from the high street last week with an overall drop in footfall of 1.5% for the week to August 2.

The number of shoppers on the high street fell by 3% while shopping centres also fell by 2.7%.

However retail parks saw an increase of 3.3% for the week.

Springboard’s director of retail insights Diane Wehrle said: “Scotland has undoubtedly seen the affect a year on from the highs of the Commonwealth Games with an understandable decline of –18.2% on the high street and –3.3% overall, an effect which may well spread across the UK for the next week to counteract the boost in tourism brought by the games last year.”
