Balmain plots Asian expansion

French luxury brand Balmain is to launch a string of stores across Asia in the latter part of the year including six in China.

The brand has recently opened a boutique in Tokyo as well as further stores in Shanghai’s IFC, Beijing’s Sanlitun Village and at the Plaza 66 in Jinan. It will end the year with 11 stores worldwide and six shop-in-shops.

Balmain chief executive Alain Hivelin said he estimated that China will account for 6 to 8% of revenues in the next year.

Hivelin also said a flagship store in Manhattan is a priority for the future.

In April Balmain promoted Olivier Rousteing to head up its ready-to-wear collections, after announcing that creative director Christophe Decarnin would leave the French luxury brand.
