Bangladesh to overtake China as largest clothing supplier by 2020

Bangladesh may overtake China to become the European Union’s largest clothing supplier by 2020, a new report has found.

In 2016 EU clothing imports from Bangladesh rose in volume for the ninth consecutive year and Bangladesh’s share of EU clothing imports from all sources almost doubled over the nine-year period, from 12.2% to 23.4%, business information provider Textiles Intelligence has reported.

Meanwhile, the share of EU clothing imports from China fell in terms of volume for the sixth consecutive year to 37.9%.

In 2010 more than half of the volume of EU clothing imports came from China. By 2016 this had dropped to a third.

In 2016 Bangladesh was the second-cheapest clothing supplier to the EU, behind Pakistan and ahead of China.
