Beales saw like-for-like sales sink 6%, excluding VAT and concessions, for the 43 weeks ended August 30.
Beales said that the 6% fall represented an improvement on the first 26 weeks of the financial year when like-for-like sales were down 6.4%.
Beales said that in recent weeks it had taken a stronger promotional stance which it believes will help lead a recovery at the department store group. It said that management were continuing to manage the group's costs and asset base tightly, which was also bringing benefits.
Beales said it would report more fully on its new strategy on November 2, when it reports its full year results.
