The British Fashion Council (BFC) has launched a database of high-end British manufacturers.
The nationwide database is free to use and will sit within the BFC Designer Fact File – a business-learning platform that aims to provide insights and training to fashion firms at a range of stages, from start-ups to established brands.
The manufacturers listed on the database were sourced through designer recommendations, as well as research carried out on behalf of the BFC in 2015.
In the second stage of the project, the BFC will conduct a full audit of all manufacturers listed. The database is expected to grow organically as designers and BFC partners recommend more names, and suppliers submit themselves for listing.
The need for a database of audited manufacturers was highlight in a report by the BFC and a working group comprising Marks & Spencer, UKFT, Creative Skillset, The Alliance Project and Centre for Fashion Enterprise, which was published in March 2015.
The database forms part of the BFC’s Positive Fashion initiative, through which the organisation hopes to encourage designer businesses to prioritise sustainability and ethical practices.
