The winning designer will receive a year-long mentoring programme as well as a £200,000 grant to develop the next stage of their business.

The judging committee is chaired by Vogue UK editor Alexandra Schulman and includes British Fashion Council chief executive Caroline Rush, Browns founder Joan Burnstein and Topshop managing director Mary Homer.

Shulman said: “This is an inspiring shortlist because of its diversity. It is a great representation of the spread of British fashion designers and all the contenders have huge strengths to their creative visions.”

The five designers are featured in a window at Harrods from today for the next two weeks.

Previous winners of the fund include Christopher Kane, Erdem, Mary Katrantzou, Nicholas Kirkwood and Peter Pilotto.
