Billionaire takes stake in Hammerson

Property billionaire John Whittaker has built up a 4.6% stake in shopping centre giant Hammerson, the owner of Leeds’ Victoria Gate and Brent Cross in north London, the Sunday Times reported yesterday.

Whittaker’s Peel Holdings already owns a 26.1% in shopping centre owner Intu and he serves as its deputy chairman.

Hammerson is due to start work this year on a new shopping centre in Croydon and a £1.4bn revamp of Brent Cross that will double the size of the centre, adding 20 stores, 40 restaurants, and a cinema complex.
