Bira denies links with external business rates appeal service

The British Independent Retailers Association is warning members that a company offering to save thousands of pounds on business rate charges is not working on behalf of Bira as claimed.

Bira said one of its members was asked to pay an upfront fee of £900 and has received nothing in return. Manchester-based SJ Associates reportedly claimed to be working on behalf of Bira, which it is not.

Bira is now taking legal action to prevent the misuse of its name. It said its official rating service is provided by specialist surveyors DTZ and does not ask for upfront payments as the service is provided on a no win, no fee basis.

It has urged any members approached by SJ Associates to inform Bira immediately.

SJ Associates has been contacted for a response.
