Black Friday: a snapshot of Oxford Street

London’s Oxford Street was busy this afternoon, as crowds of Black Friday shoppers began to build after a quieter than expected start for some retailers.

There were offers of up to 50% off from Arcadia brands Topshop and Miss Selfridge, as well as House of Fraser, Matalan and New Look. Schuh had up to 40% off.

A sales assistant in Urban Outfitters, which is offering up to 50% off until Monday, said it was quiet this morning but has steadily been getting busier through the day.

Zara was offering 20% off selected lines of winter products, such as outerwear, knitwear and boots. A sales assistant said it had been busy throughout the day.

This was echoed by a members of staff in John Lewis, who told Drapers: “It has been crazy all day; it hasn’t stopped.”

John Lewis drafted in 2,000 extra staff across all of its stores for this year’s event.
