John lewis oxford street (5)

John Lewis & Partners has reported the biggest sales week in its history as customers took advantage of its Black Friday deals in store and online.

Total sales were up 7.7% year on year to for the week ending 24 November.

Fashion sales rose 13.1% on last year, fuelled by Black Friday promotions on branded items as John Lewis price matched its competitors’ offers.

It also reported strong growth in its own brand collections.

John Lewis said sales were less concentrated on Black Friday itself this year, and instead were spread out across the week. However, Black Friday was still the busiest day for shopping.

  • But what has it done to their profit margin and will do to their sales into December? They have almost certainly been dragged into excess discounting with the 'Never Knowingly Undersold' as many brands had blanket discounts, therefore it is too early for them to judge whether it has been a success or not.

  • Returns are typically 3-4 times that of stores. Drapers never gets the real story.

  • Is it also because there are other local department stores that have already closed? Ref. HoF and Debs.

  • Or alternatively, a record loss of margin. Nothing clever from JLP here, as there is no art in selling things cheaply.
