The Mail on Sunday reported that although Bolland resigned in January, he will continue to be paid until after Christmas at a cost of around £1m.

The newspaper flagged that city watchdogs are likely to scrutinise the terms of his pay-off and bonuses as laid out by the company’s annual report, which is due out later this week.

  • Absolute disgrace. M&S is an old boys' club where mediocrity is highly rewarded.
