Bourne enters retail market with its first store

Women’s footwear and clothing brand Bourne is to take its first step into retail with its own store in Yorkshire.

The 1,290 sq ft store at 149 King Street in Cottingham, Yorkshire, will open in August stocking the full Bourne collection plus a range of contemporary womenswear and accessories brands including Almost Famous, Twist & Tango, Becksöndergaard , Ash and Second Female.

“We will essentially be our own indie,” said founder Michael Lambourne. “It will be a good barometer for us because, as a label that suppliers other indies, we can get a good idea of what’s selling from our own shop.”

The move into retail came about because the label was on the hunt for new offices and found the premises with a shop. “We weren’t necessarily looking for it,” said Lambourne. He added that he would “never say never” with regards to opening further stores.

The brand, which has about 30 UK stockists, is also increasing the number of drops it makes each season.

Lambourne said from autumn 14 it would inject an extra “bolt-on” mid-season collection. Christmas 14 will be its first range, followed by a high summer collection next year. “We thought we had to be a little more active in the market,” he said.
