Brands called on to support Independent retailer month

Brands are being encouraged to engage with customers by supporting Independent retailer month.

Clare Rayner, who founded the Support for Independent Retail Campaign in 2011, said there was potential for brands to “lead by example” by throwing their weight behind the drive to revive local village and town centres.

In particular, she called on large brands to use their “marketing clout” to back the scheme and “help drive home to the consumer the unique, exclusive benefits that shopping locally can offer”.

Rayner said that while Independent Retailer Month already had some “real power houses” behind it, others should “join the revolution” and “turn the perception of the British high street around to make it great once more.”

The campaign, which runs for the month of July, aims to raise awareness of local companies and increase footfall in town and village centres by helping retailers stay open and improve their network of fellow traders.
