Brands warned to beware of Olympic cyber attacks

Brands and sponsors for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2016 are being warned to stay vigilant ahead of the launch on Friday, after a surge in “test” attacks on networks in Rio.

Online hacking group Anonymous is likely to target the sponsors, as it did during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the World Cup in 2014, warned network security firm Radware. Fashion sponsors for Rio 2016 include Nike and C&A.

Anonymous may also attack cloud providers, ISPs and power suppliers involved in keeping the games running smoothly, as well as the broadcast agencies covering the events.

Adrian Crawley, regional director for northern EMEA at Radware, said: “In the opening days of the World Cup just about every company sponsoring the event found that their networks were either the subject of a denial of service attack, rendering them incapable of doing their job, or their websites were defaced.

”This time around the socio-political tensions have intensified, and attacks tools have become more sophisticated. Anyone involved in the games needs to be looking at their network patterns and identifying the likely attacks they will face.”
