British buyers descend on Gallery show in Copenhagen

The second day of Gallery (August 7) saw British buyers descend on the Copenhagen trade show, held at Forum in the city centre, after CIFF and Vision came to an end the day before.

Although the show had a slower start than on its first day, reactions across the board from both buyers and exhibitors were positive.

“Gallery is the best in terms of brands,” said Ella Wells, founder of Brighton womenswear and menswear independent store Our Daily Edit. “It’s our first time here [in Copenhagen]. CIFF was a good show, but mostly for womenswear brands. We went to Vision but there wasn’t much there for us. It’s been worthwhile coming as we wanted to go somewhere not all the other British buyers go, so we could find something a bit different from the brand mix.”

“We’ve seen some really nice pieces at Gallery so far, including leathers,” said Nicholas Thorne, menswear buyer at London independent store Question Air. “We come twice a year to Copenhagen and this time we have done a day and a half at CIFF and a day for Gallery. There are generally more interesting, newer brands at CIFF but Gallery is still a great show.”

A few tired-looking exhibitors were on their fifth day of the trade shows, having shown at both CIFF and Gallery. Drapers spoke to Søren Harresø, chief executive of Danish menswear label 2xH Brothers, who praised both fairs. “We’re a new brand, so it’s important for us to get out in front of lots of customers,” he said. “Yesterday was busy at Gallery, but today seems quieter. CIFF kept us busy and we saw people there that we haven’t seen here and vice versa.”

The brand also showed at Jacket Required in London, which Harresø described as a “good show.” However, he said the second day of the London show was very quiet, commenting: “It’s been better with buyers here at Gallery.”

Another Danish label which showed at both CIFF and Gallery was Weekend CPH. Sales manager Behzad Kian Bahari echoed Harresø‘s sentiments on the shows, telling Drapers: “CIFF offered us a place, so we showed there as well as Gallery. It was good to see both and they were busy in different ways. Generally it’s been very positive. Scandinavian buyers, from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland have been at Gallery rather than CIFF, but there were more British buyers at CIFF.”

Regarding the ever-present issue of this season’s date change, which saw CIFF and Vision move to an earlier start date of August 3, Bahari added: “As its Copenhagen Fashion Week, we should all be supporting each other rather than working against each other. A lot of buyers have struggled with limited time and have only seen half of CIFF and half of Gallery. I don’t think the dates will clash again next season. In the last three years, CIFF has gotten better and better. Lots of Scandinavian brands are thinking of returning to the show.”

Bjorn Bruun, founder of brands Bruuns Bazaar and Baum und Pferdgarten, told Drapers that despite having a strong presence across Copenhagen Fashion Week, he values Gallery as a trade show. He said: “This is a good show. You still get the big, important buyers here which is great. We see existing customers but also lots of new ones. I have two catwalk shows as part of Copenhagen fashion week, a separate showroom and five stands at Gallery. Even with the catwalk show and showroom, it’s still very worthwhile.”
