The closing date is April 14 and the results will be made available at the end of April to all those who participate.

The monitor aims to provide a snapshot of the health of the high street from the perspective of independent small and medium-sized retail businesses.

The BSSA represents around 4,000 members with a combined turnover of more than £3 billion.

BSSA chief executive John Dean said: "This sales monitor of quarterly performance is a key element in our campaign to draw attention to the plight of the high street and the very real challenges facing many businesses."

Dean added: "This more accurate representation will enable us to comment authoritatively on the performance of the high street from the small and independent retailers' perspective, highlighting the issues which most impact upon them."
