Bullish outlook among men’s indies at AIS

Classic menswear independents shrugged off concerns about economic doom and gloom at the AIS buying group’s show in Solihull last week.

Most retailers at the show said year-on-year sales were flat or slightly down, but many added that they had not experienced lower sales and reduced footfall over Christmas, which was reported across the high street.

One retailer, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was not concerned about consumer confidence. “We are buying marginally less, that’s all,” he said. “But a tough economic climate can be offset by a spell of good weather. I’m more concerned about the weather.”

There were several new brands showing at AIS, including CAT, Balmain and Rockport. Exhibitors were pleased with the turnout at the show, which was shortened to three days from its previous four.
