McClennon has spent 29 years at consumer goods company Unilever, latterly as chief information officer for the consumer division.

He will continue in his role as non-executive director at Bonmarché, which he has held since April 2016.

Burberry has also appointed Judy Collinson as chief merchandising officer from Christian Dior, where she served as senior vice-president of merchandising for the US for five years.

She previously worked at Barneys New York for 22 years, rising to executive vice-president, general merchandising manager women’s.

Collinson will report initially to chief creative and chief executive Christopher Bailey and then to Marco Gobbetti when he becomes chief executive on 5 July.

She succeeds Paul Price, who will leave in July to pursue a new opportunity.
