Burberry poaches design director from Christian Dior

Sabrina Bonesi has joined Burberry as design director for leather goods and shoes, reporting directly to Christopher Bailey.

Bonesi was head designer for women’s leather goods at Christian Dior from October 2008 and was previously senior accessories designer at Prada for three years from February 2005 to July 2008 and accessories design consultant at Bottega Veneta from February 2001 to December 2004.

In the newly-created role, she will be responsible for the design of all women’s and men’s bags, accessories and shoes.

Bonesi’s appointment follows that of Claudia Plant, who joined the British luxury brand in January this year as senior vice president of brand experience. She was previously global brand creative director at Net-A-Porter, where she spent 17 years.

The brand’s new chief executive, Marco Gobbetti, will take over from Bailey on 5 July.

Gobbetti joined the business on 27 January from French luxury brand Céline, but his role is initially limited to executive chairman of Asia Pacific and Middle East as he has to wait for certain contractual commitments to expire. He reports into chairman John Peace.

Bailey remains chief creative and chief executive officer until then. Once Gobbetti moves into his permanent role, Baily will become president and chief creative officer.
