Last week was one for acknowledging the talent and commitment in this dynamic, hard-working and highly competitive industry.
We announced our Newgen winners for September 2011’s London Fashion Week - the very best of the UK’s emerging talent - while designers, the media, stylists, tutors, actresses, models and sponsors lined Somerset House’s Terrace Bar to congratulate them and gear up for September. Our ambassador for emerging talent, Sarah Mower - who was this week awarded an MBE - roused support for London’s rising stars, championing them as “Team Fashion” ahead of our Olympic Year.
On Thursday we co-hosted an event with The Telegraph at London’ s St Pancras Renaissance Hotel to celebrate the career of journalist Hilary Alexander. She has, for more than 26 years, fought to get fashion on the front page and championed the industry. Journalist Suzy Menkes, British Fashion Council (BFC) chairman Harold Tillman and The Daily Telegraph editor Tony Gallagher paid tribute to her and thanked those who supported the event to honour one of fashion’s great journalists.
Graduate Fashion Week showcased future employees. Some of the students shortlisted for the BFC Colleges Council Warehouse competition revealed they used the week to network and, although exhausted from bringing together their final collections, portfolios and shows, were geared up for building their careers here in the UK.
The Queen completed our marathon of events by recognising some of those who have made outstanding contributions to our industry in her Birthday Honours List. This rounded off a week that reminded us of the hard work, determination and boundless energy required and delivered by so many to make our industry so unique.
