Buying boss leaves Matalan after 10 years

Matalan’s buying director Mitch Hughes has left the business after 10 years, Drapers understands.

Hughes joined Matalan as a senior buyer in 2005. He was promoted to menswear buying manager in 2007, menswear and childrenswear buying controller in 2009 and buying director responsible for clothing and home in April 2011.

In this last role he worked to bolster the in-house design and buying team, shake up Matalan’s sourcing systems and improve the in-store experience.

Before Matalan, he spent eight years as men’s casualwear buyer at Marks & Spencer from 1997 to 2005.

It is understood he left Matalan within the last couple of weeks, but his next steps are not known. Matalan did not respond to requests for a comment.

Matalan has pushed back the opening of its Oxford Street store from May 14 to June 4.
