Cambridge Satchel founder launches self-employment survey

Julie Deane, founder and chief executive of The Cambridge Satchel Company, has launched a nationwide survey to find out how the self-employed might be better supported to start, maintain and grow their businesses.

Prime minister David Cameron asked Deane in July to run the independent survey. The results will be incorporated into a report, due in early 2016, to highlight the challenges facing small- and medium-sized businesses.

The survey, which is hosted through the Department for Business, Skills & Innovation, will be open until November 8.

Deane said: “This is for everyone who work for themselves. It’s very easy to sit at home grumbling about how things could be done better, but this is your chance to have your say. I want my review to reflect the views and concerns of those who are in the thick of it.”

Business minister Anna Soubry said: “Self-employed people make a huge contribution to our economy. This review will help uncover the challenges and opportunities faced by those who work for themselves, so we can continue to support the nation’s entrepreneurs. Whether starting out or experienced in the day-to-day running of business, this is a great chance for people to tell us what they think.”

  • I would like to start my own business but everything says it's a bad idea - employment law, how on earth i would ever get a mortgage or any borrowing etc. The government need to make it more attractive, especially as I would be ploughing everyting back into British industry rather than Chinese.
